GOGI Comes to Purgatory

On June 1st, a group of female inmates at the Purgatory Correctional Facility began a12-week GOGI course. Getting Out by Going In (GOGI) is a non-profit organization that helps at-risk and incarcerated individuals make better choices by changing unhealthy patterns of thought and behavior. The course teaches simple tools for positive decision-making and internal freedom. The twelve tools of GOGI are the foundation of the curriculum and were designed by prisoners to share with other prisoners.

The twelve tools of GOGI are:

  1. Let Go
  2. Claim Responsibility
  3. Belly Breathing
  4. Five Second Light Switch
  5. Positive Actions
  6. Reality Check
  7. Forgive
  8. boss of Your Brain
  9. Positive Thoughts
  10. What If?
  11. Ultimate Freedom

These twelve simple tools have been proven to reduce recidivism and increase positive decision-making among program participants. In fact, mastering just one of these tools can make a significant difference in a person’s thinking. During the course, the students received a special visit from GOGI creator, Coach Mara Taylor. Taylor led a two hour session and signed students’ books after class. In all, eight female students graduated from the course.

GOGI is strictly a volunteer-based, non-profit organization which relies heavily on the participants’ desire and willingness to claim responsibility for their own change. The program runs solely on contributions from the community. This initial GOGI class was made possible thanks to several community donors who helped to provide the necessary materials and books.

The next GOGI class will be offered to male inmates and is scheduled to begin in September. If you would like to become a donor , or would like more information regarding other ways to get involved, please write to:
