Inmates housed at Purgatory Correctional Facility had the opportunity to learn a new construction trade and benefit the Washington County Children’s Justice Center at the same time. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with Dixie Applied Technology College (DXATC) continued their construction trades course, by offering inmates the opportunity to learn masonry.Inmates approaching release back into the community, and already cleared to work in outside the Correctional facility while supervised by deputies, requested to participate in the program. DXATC supplied the instructor, who worked along side the inmates as they received training and applied their new found skills to construct a badly needed block wall located at the Children’s justice center here in Washington County. This is the second such course to be offered as an educational resource to the inmates of Purgatory. Each time these classes facilitate and promote a symbiotic relationship where all the parties involved benefit from the experience.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office would like to express it’s appreciation to all those who contributed to this effort by donating materials, equipment, personnel, or time: Sunroc, Wheeler Machinery, Dixie Applied Technology College, and the Children’s Justice Center.
