We have implemented a free drug disposal program for the citizens of Washington County. Unused medication and drugs can be dropped off for proper disposal, preventing the contamination of Utah’s water system that can occur when drugs are flushed or poured down drains. Studies have shown that pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter drugs are present in our water supplies. Outdated or unused drugs that are disposed of by flushing or pouring down a sink, enter the environment. Wastewater treatment facilities are not designed to remove them.
With assistance from the Division of Water Quality of the Utah Department of Environmental Quality, we have placed a secure drop box for all unused over-the-counter, prescription, and illicit drugs in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office. The drugs will be collected, documented, and then disposed of in a manner which prevents contamination of our water system, and in accordance with guidelines set by the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency.
Storing unused or outdated prescriptions creates an opportunity for abuse. One in five teens report intentionally misusing someone else’s prescription drugs to get high. Some say they get the medications from friends and relatives by stealing from their medicine cabinet. Disposing of unused medication will not only help keep Utah’s water supplies clean, but help prevent illicit drug use.
The drug disposal drop box may be accessed during business hours: Monday through Friday, between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm. The drops are anonymous and private. Simply walk into the lobby, drop your medications and/or drugs, then leave. Please remove personal information from all labels prior to dropping and do not drop syringes in the collection box.
We are pleased to offer this service and we look forward to working with our citizens to help keep Utah’s water free from contamination of all drugs.
