As the school year comes to an end, The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public to recreate responsibly and follow the established laws related to OHV operation. A commonly overlooked law is the requirement to possess a valid driver’s license and/or OHV safety certificate in order to operate an OHV on public lands. Operators must be over the age of eight and have a current safety certificate or valid driver’s license. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to educating the public in the safe and legal operation of OHV’s. Our mission is to reduce injuries and fatalities through education. We pursue this mission through our Off Highway Vehicle Education Program.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office Off Highway Vehicle Education Program is currently the only classroom based curriculum to obtain the required OHV safety certificate. We will be offering this course at no charge on June 1st 2013 at 9:00 a.m. at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. Students who attend the course will learn about OHV terminology, equipment, safe driving practices, state and local laws and more. Upon successfully passing the course they will be issued a valid safety certificate.

The Sheriff’s Office also understands the importance of proper safety equipment. To ensure our citizens are safe, we have teamed up with Safe Kids to offer youth sized helmets at a discounted rate. The discounted helmets will be available during the course to family members of students attending the course. The course is limited to 50 students and typically fills up fast.
